Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year from September 15 to October 15, the United States observes National Hispanic Heritage Month — honoring the histories, cultures, and extraordinary contributions of Americans whose roots trace to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The start date is intentional: September 15 marks the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.

Why does it matter? Because Hispanic Americans have shaped this country from its earliest days — as explorers, farmers, soldiers, artists, scientists, educators, and leaders — yet their stories have often gone untold in classrooms and textbooks. Recognizing this month is an act of historical accuracy as much as celebration. It affirms that our students of Hispanic heritage see themselves reflected in their education, and that all students graduate with a fuller, truer picture of American history. At Carlsbad Unified, we believe that understanding where we come from strengthens where we’re going — together.
